Presented by Kennel Attendant and actor Cam Faull, the Seeing Eye Dogs Show, broadcast on Vision Australia Radio, is your guide to the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes at Seeing Eye Dogs (SED).
Broadcast fortnightly, the show will also bring you all of the latest in dog health, puppy and foster caring, interviews with experts and more.
On the latest edition, Cam is joined by SED breeding program associate Jade Fowler for a chat about breeding Seeing Eye Dogs.
Jade told Cam that the SED breeding program takes a lot of planning, with it factors like which dogs might be pregnant or coming into season needing to be taken into consideration.
“We look at multiple years ahead, but we do specific planning for at least three months ahead,” Jade said.
When breeding, Jade said SED takes into account behavioural characteristics, as well as considering possible health issues.
“You want to look for all of the good qualities. You want to know if they’re happy to be with you on the walk, if they’re happy to be a leader … There’s lots of different qualities we are looking for and that we might be trying to steer away from,” she said.
"Obviously we can have a perfect dog behaviourally and temperamentally but there might be some health issues that we need to look out for.”
For Jade, the varied nature of her role is what she enjoys about working at SED HQ.
“Every day’s a bit different. Usually we do some assessment walks with puppy development training."
