Presented by Kennel Attendant and actor Cam Faull, the Seeing Eye Dogs Show, broadcast on Vision Australia Radio, is your guide to the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes at Seeing Eye Dogs.
Broadcast fortnightly, the show will also bring you all of the latest in dog health, puppy and foster caring, interviews with experts and more.
On the latest edition, Cam is again joined by Seeing Eye Dogs Service Engagement Consultant (SEC) Teish Watson for an extended chat about the SEC role and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
In her role, Teish supports people who are interested in using their NDIS packages to access a Seeing Eye Dog and explained what that process can look like.
“If you are a participant or a client that has been assessed by one of the instructors then I will get in touch… I’ll consult with the client and see if they’re happy to receive my support to start the process of securing funding for when a dog becomes available and is identified as a suitable match so we can start the training straight away,” Teish said.
“We’ll have a casual and informal conversation about what your life looks like and your routine. Things like how many routes do you walk, do you catch public transport, why do want a Seeing Eye Dog, how will it enhance your mobility, what are some of the barriers you might be facing and how do you feel a Seeing Eye Dog can alleviate that?” she said
While Teish works with people in relation to the NDIS and SED specifically, she also offered some general advice around accessing the scheme.
“I would suggest having conversations with people and professionals you trust and have worked with and that no question is a silly question,” she said.
“If you can provide as much supporting documentation from any clinician or professional you might have engaged to support any request you’re asking for, that will only make your application stronger.”
